Located in the heart of France’s Côte d’Azur, between Monaco and Cannes, Nice has a long history of attracting visitors and new settlers with its natural beauty and cosmopolitan charm. But Nice is not just the quaint and placid town that many people may suppose; it’s also one of the largest and most exciting cities in France. As well as its great climate, excellent transport connections and beautiful surrounding countryside, Nice also offers expats exciting employment opportunities in its main industry of tourism, as well as its burgeoning technology scene – with some commentators even labelling Nice as a “city of tomorrow.”

Many people are attracted to living in Nice because of its balmy Mediterranean climate. Expats settling in this picturesque city can expect to enjoy gorgeous six-month summers and very mild temperatures in the brief winter. Summers in Nice are warm and dry, with temperatures ranging from 24°C to 32°C. Winters are typically sunny with relatively little rainfall and average temperatures of between 10°C to 16°C.  Although many residents living in Nice will speak some English thanks to its tourism industry, most locals will not be interested in speaking English. Therefore, it is strongly advised that you have at least a basic knowledge of French before moving to Nice. This will help distinguish you from the many tourists that enter the city each year as well as make your social and working life significantly easier.

As a result of its glittering past – and now its exciting present – Nice can compete with the same level of elegance as Paris but with the added advantage of its Mediterranean climate. Whatever your interests, Nice has something to offer everyone. Whether you prefer relaxing on one of Nice’s many beaches or maybe you prefer retail therapy at the Avenue Jean Medecin in Nice’s commercial centre, this city has leisure activities to cater to all tastes.

Housing for residents in Nice is primarily available in the city’s suburbs as most of the accommodation in the city centre is rental property aimed at Nice’s thriving tourist market. EU and EEA citizens do not require a visa to enter France. However, anyone travelling or living in France must be able to provide proof of their identity with either a valid passport, photo driving licence or other accepted documentation provided by an official government body. Upon arrival in Nice, you will need to register with your local CPAM (“Caisse Primaire d’Assurance Maladie”) to obtain a “Carte Vitale”, which is the social security card for health care in France. For more information on visas, health care and other general advice for moving to Nice please visit the UK government’s immigration guidance website here.
