Paris is divided into 20 arrondissements (or districts), with the lower numbers located at the centre of the city. As with most major cities, different districts have different qualities and naturally come with different price ranges. For example, the Latin Quarter that spans the fifth and sixth arrondissement is an ideal location for expat families due to the high concentration of schools, while the sixteenth arrondissement is the traditional home of Paris high society and embassies so property prices are predictably higher. Expats living in Paris can also expect some of the best educational institutions in the world. Paris is home to some of the finest free state schools in France, such as the Lycée Louis-le-Grand and Lycée Henri-IV, and also boasts four of the world’s top universities, which include the École Polytechnique and the École Normale Supérieure.

Although there are many English speakers in France – especially in Paris –learning French will greatly help you get under the skin of this stunning and vibrant city. This is especially the case if you intend to work in Paris, as an inability to speak French will significantly hinder your job prospects, as well as make day-to-day life that much more difficult.

Citizens of EU or EEA countries do not need to apply for a visa to live and work in Paris but expats are required to register at their local Mairie (Town Hall) within three months of arriving. EU and EAA citizens can also apply for their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) roughly six weeks before moving to Paris, enabling them to bill their home government healthcare provider for any medical treatment. However, once you become a French citizen you are entitled to the same health care rights as your neighbouring Parisians. Likewise, if you are working in France you qualify for Securité Sociale (French state health insurance). Move information on living in France can be found at the GOV.uk website.
