Alicante is one of the most popular cities in Spain, and is located on the famous Costa Blanca on the south-east coast. Its vibrancy is owed to the melting pot of different cultures, its wonderful climate, and its buzzing nightlife. There is a significant expat community which will allow you to instantly feel at home.
Alicante’s economy is based around the industrial and service sectors. Construction is the primary employer, as the city has been a hotbed for construction since the 60s. Of course, tourism provides the biggest income for Alicante, so services geared towards foreigner’s experience are the biggest employers. The port is one of the busiest in Spain so the district around the harbour is the best place to find work in the commercial sector. There is always a growing call for English teachers, so if you are in need of some spare money or a quick fix whilst you look for other work, this is a fantastic option.

During the summer months, tourism is at its peak, Alicante suffers from frequent traffic jams due to the increase in taxi services. The roads are usually clear all other times of the year, however, so those wanting to drive will not have trouble getting around. The city boasts an extensive electric tram system that runs throughout the city and even into nearby Benidorm, which reduces the need to use the bus service. The central train station links the city with major Spanish cities such as Valencia, Madrid, and Barcelona. Alicante Airport is only a 20 minute drive away and offers a multitude of international flights across Europe and beyond.
Apartments are the most common form of accommodation in Alicante, and both purchasing and rent prices are lower here than in the rest of the country. Of course, the closer you get to the sea the more expensive the properties. El Barrio is the Old Town, and is a lively part of the city, home to many of Alicante’s most historic attractions and landmarks. Alicante’s other residential regions are very similar to each other. And as the expat community is so spread throughout the city, there is some top quality education for those expats’ children. Public school is free as long as you register on the Empadronamiento which is the municipal register. The main international schools are the COBIS British School, Kings College British, and International School of Alicante.
There are so many great things to occupy you time in Alicante. You can take a Gourmet walking tour, or a city Segway Tour. Climb up to the 10th century Santa Barbara Castle, which provides unrivalled views of the city. Swim and Snorkel on the protected marina reserve of Tabarca Island. You can also explore the Canelobre Caves on a guided tour!
