Located on the south-west coast of Spain, Cádiz is the capital of the region of the same name, and the oldest city in Europe. It is also known as the capitol of Flamenco, so it won’t be a surprise to find that this is a passionate city. And if it looks familiar, that’s because you have seen it in a James Bond movie, posing as Havana.
Whilst work in Cádiz itself might be hard to come by, it is worth expanding your horizons and looking for jobs in nearby Puerto Real and San Fernando, each 20min drive away. Of course, teaching English is a great way to get some extra income, or to tie you over till you find your next job. As Cádiz is a port city entirely surrounded by water, there won’t be a big surprise to find that this is its biggest employer. The economy also heavily reliant on tourism, so jobs that cater to these two industries can easily be found.

Jerez Airport is a 30 minute drive away, and serves many destinations across Europe. Living in Cádiz will require a car, because there isn’t that much variety when it comes to public transport. For example, there isn’t a metro or underground network. There is a bus service that operates to many other destinations across the coast, especially to other popular destinations such as Seville. The main bus station is helpfully called Cádiz. San Severiano is the main train station, and will also get you to many domestic destinations. What Cádiz does have over many other cities on the Spanish coast are many ferry services to and from the Canary Islands, so weekend trips away to beautiful Tenerife is easy!
Cádiz has some beautiful old neighbourhoods for you to choose from such as the fishing quarter of La Viña (a great place to find tapas bars to suit every taste) just behind the Puerta de Tierra is the first part of the city you will enter when you get off the bus/train. It’s one of the smaller districts but is charming and out of the main tourist area, whilst being in a great position to take advantage of those destinations. The tightly-packed quarter of San Carlos is in the north-west of the city, and is a popular residential and working neighbourhood. El Puerto de Santa María’s El Centro Ingles is a great school 20 minutes away, and runs buses too and from Cádiz bay. The Sotogrande International School is a well known estabilishment, but it is a 90 minute drive from the city.
There are some fantastic things to do in Cádiz, and none so beautiful as taking the winding pathway to the Castle of San Sebastián which sits at the end of a long causeway the runs from the northwest of the city out to sea. Residents choose to take in the summer sun at Playa La Caleta. There are a variety of water sporting options, and it’s a little quieter than other tourist beaches. Another option Playa de la Victoria rated as Europes best urban beach.
