Western Europe’s oldest city, Lisbon is set on the southern coast of Portugal, so expats can expect to enjoy the best of both worlds, the cosmopolitan city and the relaxing sea-side. Since its brief stint as the European City of Culture in 1994, Lisbon has grown to be one of the most popular expat destinations in Europe, and continues to enchant those that visit.
Home to the best jobs market in Portugal (and also the most the country’s wealthiest region), Lisbon’s service sector is ripe for those job hunting. Most major Portuguese companies have their headquarters in the city, such as Portuguese Telecom and Energies de Portugal. The city’s port is one of the most important employers, as it is a major export-hub. Multinational corporations have their offices set in the surrounding Oeiras area, where companies such as Nestlé, Samsung, and Hewlett-Packard all rub shoulders. Local salaries may not be the highest in Europe, but then the cost of living is also very low so they balance out. English is also spoken very well throughout the city, so not knowing a vast amount of Portuguese isn’t going to hinder you chances.

EUROPE

Like all metropolitan cities, Lisbon has great public transport. It showcases all the usual interconnected transport modes, such as a, truthfully, unreliable buses service running from 06:00 – 23:00 and some night buses, an accessible metro system (06:00 – 01:30), and a train station that serves intercontinental, and domestic services. All of these are rather inexpensive. What isn’t common in many European cities are Funiculars helping those travers the steep hills that Lisbon is built on top of.
The district of choice for families with a moderate budget is the Campo de Ourique and is located a little further than the city centre. Upmarket Principe Real is already popular with designers, architects, and media companies, and is a great option should the budget allow. Bairro Alto is the place to see and be seen, and is considered the hip and trendy area of the city, and Parque de Naçoes has undergone a complete facelift over the last two decades, offering plenty of modern developments. There are also a string of top quality international schools such as the British School of Lisbon, the United Lisbon International School, and the Astoria International School.
There are many ways to explore the city, from electric bike tours, to food and wine and sailing yacht tours. Equivalent to London’s Portobello Market is the Feira da Ladra where bargains on all sorts of goods can be found. You can visit any number of the wonderful museums in the city, like the Museum of Contemporary Art. Or take in the sunset on top of a sprawling rooftop bar at the south-western corner of the Bairro Alto. The Belém Tower is a top attraction in the city and visit to this UNESCO World Heritage site is an absolute must. Or if you are a fan of the morbid, walk around Praeres Cemetery and wonder through the marble and stone headstones of some of Portugal’s most famous people.
