Officially declared as one of the greenest cities in Europe, Madrid is a major Spanish city that is known the world over (and not just because of its football team). It is a foodie’s paradise, a cultural hub, and has over 300+ days of sunshine. Everything is on offer in the capital city of Spain!
Being a major European city, Madrid attracts direct foreign investment as well as a multitude of multinational corporations. The service industry is the city’s major economic sector, and expats are able to find more job opportunities on average than in any other Spanish city. Madrid also boasts some of the highest wages in Spain, but its increase in popularity means that the cost of living is also increasing. Of course, teaching English is a popular profession, and other expat employers include IT, finance, skilled labour and engineering. Spanish speakers or those willing to learn the language will find themselves at an advantage.

Put your worries about travelling to one side, the city is absolutely great at providing public transport services. It is equipped with an excellent metro system, and the high-speed rail network connects the city to the rest of the country with ease. The bus network is a great (and cheaper) alternative, especially when it is noted that driving is not recommended in the city. There are limited parking spaces and Spanish drivers are notoriously aggressive on the road. This might put you off cycling, even though the city has made some major improvements to its cycle network.
Family friendly neighbourhoods include Chamberi, just southwest of Salamanca. This child oriented district closes its major street and square every Sunday to allow the kids to roam free without the fear of being knocked over. Barrio de las Letras is a slice of old Madrid, with loads of tapas bars and nightspots. Salamanca Barrio is the upmarket part of the city, and Triball, just north of Calle Gran Via, is the up and coming part of the city. Whilst Spain provided free state education, there are still great international alternatives such as The Hastings school and the International School of Madrid.
It goes without saying that there are plenty of things to do in Madrid. You can enjoy art and markets at Matadero Madrid (a converted slaughterhouse), or take in the best views of the city from Círculo de Bellas Artes, which is an cultural epicentre in the city. Romantics will want to stroll through El Capricho park in the Barajas district, or go to Cerro del Tío Pío and watch the sun set of the city. Oner of the most important pieces of art, Picasso’s ‘Guernica’ can be seen at the Reina Sofía museum, the best urban art can be found at La Tabacalera, and works by trailblazing artists are shown at La Neomudéjar. Foodies will want to try one of the best set menus in the city at Coque, or grab a bite of France at the Instituto Francés de Madrid.
