Unlike many other towns along the southern Spanish coast, Tarragona has much more to offer than just sand and sun. It is one of the most fascinating historical cities in the country, with a history of Jewish, Roman, and Moorish remains making up it’s architecture.
Tarragona’s economy rests on two main industries, the industrial (in particular the chemical and petrochemical) and services such as tourism. In recent years, it has become a major International exhibition and conference centre. Tarragona’s port is one of the largest in the Mediterranean. Teaching English is as popular here as in the rest of the country, and can be a great ‘in between’ job, or something to do on the side to bring in a little extra money. A knowledge of Spanish will put you ahead of the rest of the expat community when job hunting, because even though English will be spoken by many locals, this isn’t a major Spanish city like Madrid or Barcelona.

As the city is quite small, the only public transport around the city that is on offer is the bus service. These run inside Tarragona and to other cities across the country, such as Barcelona (a 2 hour journey). Therefore, you are never too far away from a bus stop, and the city is small enough that you can get around relatively easy of foot. There is also the option of renting/buying a car if needs be. You can also get a train to other domestic destinations, and long distance internal travel to Madrid and Valencia, and even France!
Whilst there aren’t any International schools in Tarragona city itself, there are in Tarragona province. The Escola Turó provides trilingual education in English, Spanish, and Catalan for children aged 3 – 18, and is only a 10-minute drive from the city. There is the Jigsaw British school that caters to ages 6 – 18, which is also a short drive from the city. Education is free in Spain, so if you are fluent or can get by using Spanish, there are some great alternatives to the very expensive international schools.
There are many things to do in Tarragona, and some really unique features to pass the time with. There is a fantastic 15,000 seat Amphitheatre, and the central Cathedral sneaks up on you from the surrounding streets. Five minutes north of the city is the city’s ancient aqueduct that channels water from the Francolí River. The oldest part of the city is also its highest, and is originally where the entire city’s population once lived. You should definitely spend a day wandering around the quaint streets where some are preserved as museums. Tamarit-Punta de la Móra is a beautiful stretch of coast, which eventually gives way to a national park. Thrill seekers should definitely check out Port Aventura World, which is one of the most visited theme parks in Europe, and has attractions catered to all ages (younger visitors will never watch to leave the zone dedicated to Sesame Street).
