Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city, and is the perfect size to offer a metropolis setting, without feeling overwhelming. Located on the west coat of the country, Valencia is an innovative city that benefits from hot weather, a fantastically diverse gastronomic scene, and is a great alternative to Barcelona and Madrid.
According to the world economic forum (2017), Spain is considered the second best destination for expats to set up business. Valencia has many networking opportunities and has become a hub for entrepreneurs. Web design and people with strong IT skills are in demand as there are a lot of start up companies in the city, so those who are a wiz at coding will find a lot of opportunities to find work. English teachers are of course in demand, so there is always work even if it is for a bit of spare change. As tourist in a big part of the economy, the service industry are always looking for employees. Those interested in motor vehicles will be pleased to know that there is a local Ford Motor factory nearby that employs around 7,000 workers. Employers will often require applicants to have some knowledge of Spanish.

Valencia’s size means that it is relatively easy to get from one end to the other, with most people making use of the inner-city metro which has services running both above and below ground. You can also walk everywhere as the city doesn’t have any hills. There are also buses and cycle lanes, so you have all the options you could want when planning your routes around the city.
Many expats choose to live outside the city in villages such as L’Eliana, Puçol or Betera, all of which are well connected to the city via public transport, and offer international schools such as the British School of Valencia, Cambridge House Community School and the Iale International School, amongst others. Areas inside the city include the area around Riu Turia, near the port, or El Cabanyal which sits just behind the beach and is a popular spot with locals.
Valencia is the home of Paella and offers the best in the country, so taking a cooking class so you can take these skills home with you is a must! (or just take a trip to Central Market and take a load of it home). You can take walking tours of the Old Town, and relax in the many beautiful tree-lined squares. Valencia Cathedral is a must visit, and you can waste many a day by the port and on the beach. The Fallas festival is the city’s biggest and best festival, and is a unique spectacle unlike any other in Europe, with large, crazy statues travelling up and down the city streets (and a lot of fireworks being shot high into the sky). The must see City of Arts and Sciences is a multi-building district that encapsulates tourists and locals alike all year round. And even if you do not go to see a show etc, just walking around is enough.
