Professionals from all over the world are realising just what an attractive country Ireland is becoming. With a stable economy with a thriving tech and science industry, friendly citizens, and a breath-taking landscape, it’s no wonder that the country features on many top 10 lists of places to move to within the EU. Although it may be less sunny than parts of France, you will find plenty of warm and cozy community centres (known as pubs) that will shield you from the rain with hearty atmospheres, warm fires, and its delicious national drink, Guinness. As more and more people make Ireland their home, the countries house prices have risen year on year, so there has never been a better time to relocate to this magical island.

Some eleven and a half thousand French people live in Ireland, with the majority living in the capital city Dublin, and other major cities across the country. Finding an expat community in your new home is easy enough, as InterNationals hosts expat get-togethers that brings the expat community together, and people will happily share their knowledge to get you starting you new life on the best terms. English is the language most commonly used within the country, but it is important to know that Ireland has its own language known as Gaeilge. Signs are written in both languages, so don’t worry if you don’t know how to speak their native language.

How can I move to Ireland?

Being an EEA country, French nationals have a visa free right to stay in Ireland for three months (extended to six months if you are looking for a job) as long as you have a valid passport or identity card. If you are planning to stay longer, then you must either be already in work, be able to prove that you have enough money to sustain yourself in an emergency, sickness insurance to support yourself and you family if you have one (even though healthcare in Ireland is free), or be enrolled as a student or vocational trainee.

There is no need to register with the local immigration office, and you do not need a residence card to live there. You are entitled to apply for a permanent residency after five years of continued residency in Ireland. Continuous residency is not affected by temporary absences of less than six months or one absence of 12 months for pregnancy and childbirth, serious illness, vocational training, or if you are posted to another country by your employer in Ireland. Provided that you meet the criteria, you will then be given a certificate which will enable you to like there permanently.

Taxing and pensions in Ireland

Income made in Ireland is taxed at 20% which is known as the standard rate band. Non-Irish nationals will need to register for a Personal Public Service (PPS) number when they arrive to make sure that they are paying appropriate tax on all of their income, both foreign (as long as this amount doesn’t exceed 3,810 euros per year) and domestic. Those with incomes from both Ireland and from a different country will need to fill out a tax return form by the 31st of October.

If you wish to retire to Ireland, then you must be able to provide independent verification of your compliance with the financial conditions which must be certified by an Irish accountancy firm. All details and processes can be found on irishimmigration.ie

Travelling in Ireland

When it comes to travelling in Ireland, all of the major cities are linked by trains, with most lines feeding in and out of Dublin, which makes Ireland a very accessible country. If you need to travel to more rural areas or smaller towns, then driving is definitely going to be your best option. Bear in mind though that people in Ireland drive on the left side of the road, so this will take some getting used to.

EU driving licenses are valid in Ireland, and can be used to rent cars if you do need to drive somewhere.
