Situated at the southernmost tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Gibraltar is a little slice of Britain on the Mediterranean coast. With a population of a little over 32,000 and measuring at only 6.7 square kilometres, Gibraltar punches well above its weight when it comes to culture, history and standard of living. Affectionately known as ‘The Rock’, Gibraltar has more than 12 kilometres of pristine coastline with many beautiful beaches. It is also home to the only troop of wild primates in Europe – Gibraltar’s infamous macaques who live in the nature reserve at the peak of the rock. Its diverse cultural heritage, spectacular landscapes and abundance of outdoor pursuits make it an ideal place to relocate for people of all ages.

Gibraltar has been a British Overseas Territory for over 300 hundred years and still maintains many British systems and customs to this day. Its official language is English but Spanish is also widely spoken and will be useful to know given Gibraltar’s connections and proximity to Spain. Gibraltar is only a two and a half hour flight from the UK and also boasts excellent transport connections to the rest of Europe via bus, train, boat and plane. Gibraltar International Airport has daily flights to and from the UK whilst the bigger Malaga airport is also less than a two hour drive away. It is Gibraltar’s strong links to the British way of life combined with its Mediterranean location and subtropical climate that make it such an attractive place for relocation.
Tourism is a major source of income for ‘The Rock’, though it also has thriving banking, financial services and online gaming industries. Like so many other areas, Gibraltar’s employment system is almost identical to the UK’s. All contracts are in English and – unlike most other European destinations – bilingualism is not a prerequisite for employment, which opens up many job opportunities if you only speak English. The UK influences also extend to Gibraltar’s healthcare and education systems, which are both modelled on their British counterparts and are held to the same high standards.
Gibraltar is popular with both tourists and expats for its low taxation. Gibraltar has no capital gains tax, wealth tax, gift tax or inheritance tax, as well as low income and corporation tax. There is also no VAT charged in Gibraltar, which is great for shoppers and contributes significantly to a cheaper cost of living than in the UK. The cost of buying and renting property in Gibraltar can be on the steep side, when compared with nearby Spain, simply because of the limited availability of land. However, higher salaries, excellent job opportunities, fewer taxes and over 300 days of sunshine a year still make your move to Gibraltar an even more interesting prospect.
