Situated in East Africa, Kenya is a diverse and culturally renowned country with more than forty ethnic groups, varied landscapes, and, of course, famous the world over for its abundant wildlife. A very proud country, Kenya stresses the importance of national solidarity through a motto of “Harambee” which means ‘pulling together’.

The backbone of Kenya’s economy is agriculture, which employs over fifty percent of the population, and is a major exporter of tea and coffee. Due to its unique landscape and fascinating wildlife, the country is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, so the tourism is massive, and the service industry contributes sixty three percent to the country’s GDP. The country also contains significant mineral resources, and whilst the industry is still in its relatively infancy, there are plans to significantly develop this in the coming years. Oil is also a growing industry and has garnered the investment from both local and international investors. Overall, Kenya is an economic on the brink of significant growth, so it’s important to think entrepreneurly in order to succeed. The two official languages are English and Swahili, but many Kenyans speak their ethnic language.

The transport system in Kenya is affordable and accessible but can be unreliable at times. The most common mode of transport are the Matatus which are mini-buses that can be waved down anywhere along their fixed routes. Buses operate on longer routes between cities, and Body-bodas are motorcycle taxis that a very common for short trips. Kenya’s railway system is limited but available between the major cities.

The country has many great places to call home, each with a unique character. Nairobi is the capital of Kenya and is also its largest city, due to it being a major economic and cultural centre. it is for this reason that it is a popular choice for expats. Mombasa is a coastal city with a laid-back atmosphere, with great places to live for those who love beachfront living. Kisumu is a growing city with a vibrant culture and is known for its beautiful sunsets and lake views.

The government of Kenya has made drastic improvements to the education system in the country, both in terms of access and quality. Primary is the only mandatory schooling in the country which lasts for eight years, but there are a variety of options for continued education. International schools might be your best option, however. the International School of Kenya, Nairobi International, and Hillcrest International are all great options.

It will come as no surprise that Safari is one of the must-do experiences in the country, with the Maasai Mara being top of that list as a great way to see Kenya’s diverse wildlife. The country also has some of the best beaches in Africa, with destinations including Diani and Watamu. Expats should also familiarise themselves with the diverse ethnic culture in Kenya by visiting local cultural traditions. To see most of the country in the shortest time, a hot air balloon ride will provide a magical experience.
