Home to 180 different nationalities, Amsterdam’s welcoming and accepting environment draws expats from all over the world. Famous for its canals, bicycles, and coffee shops. Amsterdam has bit of a reputation for attracting drunk Brits on stag weekends. However, you don’t need to look very far at all in order to see the beauty that Amsterdam has to offer.
Among expats, Amsterdam is known for its work-life balance. It is common for many people, especially those with families, to work a four-day week. As with anywhere else in the world, it is easier to move with a job, than find one once you get there. It is not a requirement, however, to have a job before getting a BSN (bergerservicenummer), which is your citizen service number. Many big international companies have their headquarters or offices in the city like ING Bank, Accenture, booking.com, and Uber. Tech and finance are big employers in the city, so those with more experience will fare well in this job market.

Amsterdam offers the best of both worlds when it comes to getting around. The centre is extremely compact and therefore walkable, but the transport system is great as well! The trams, buses, trains and ferries operate from 06.00 – 00:30, so make sure you have enough money for a taxi if you are on a night out and plan to finish late. The OV-chipkaart acts as the city’s version of an Oyster or Metro card, and can be topped up with credit. As already mentioned, Amsterdam locals take “bike-friendly” to the extremes. Containing 400km and over 881,000 bikes (more than the population), 20% of the people head to work on a bicycle, and there are many Uber-esque options for renting a hop on hop off bike for short term uses. Stay away from driving, it would be more expensive and time consuming to get around the city on a four wheels.
Amsterdam can be split up into 5 districts, creatively called north, south, east, and west and centraal. Centraal is where those 17th-century houses all packed together can be found. Here, you are in the heart of the city. Oud Zuid is the posh part of Amsterdam, and is home to the Vondelpark which is Amsterdam’s largest green space. This makes it popular with families. De Pijp is situated in the south of the city, and contains a lively, multicultural atmosphere full of bars, shops and the Albert Cuyp market. Schooling in the Netherlands is up there with the best, in 2016 the World Economic Forum ranked it 5th in the world, and found Dutch kids to be the happiest in the world in 2013. The International School of Amsterdam is based in the south of the city, the British School of Amsterdam is spread over three campuses across the Oud Zuid district.
Amsterdam has everything you could want to do in a city. Great museums like the Rijksmuseum, fantastic canal cruises which come alive at night, or visit the famed Anne Frank House (but you have to book in advance you cannot buy tickets on the door). All of this and so much more!
