Located on the Costa Blanca, Dénia is one of the most popular resorts in this part of Spain. What used to be the centre of Costa Blanca’s raisin growing industry has turned into a lovely, quiet town. The World Health Organisation once named it the third healthiest place to live.
Many people living in Dénia work in the service industry and tourism. If you are desiring something office based, then you will have to commute to either Alicante or Valencia for work. Here you will have a high chance of employment, as the community in only an hour to either, this is an attractive option to many expats moving to Dénia. There is no heavy reliance on being fluent in Spanish, as many of the residents and visitors are international. However, a knowledge of Spanish will put you ahead of other expats looking for work. This will also be a good option for teachers as there are more school in these areas.

There is just enough public transport in Dénia that you shouldn’t have too much of a problem getting around. The Alicante Tram will take you to any nearby towns and the rest of the Costa Blanca. Buses run frequently enough and is very cheap so you will be saving tons of money on your commute. The buses will also take you further than the coast, with services running too and from Barcelona. Linking the Balearic Islands to Dénia is the ferry service. You can get to Mallorca in 3h 30min with the added bonus of a stunning sea view! Most people get around just fine via a car though.
It goes without saying that buying a property close to the marina is going to be more expensive than purchasing one further in land, but compared to major UK cities, property prices are not eye watering (and there are always rental options). A little further out of the town are the residential areas of El Verger and Ondara, which still offer that authentic Spanish atmosphere, but allow you to avoid the summer tourists. There aren’t actually any international schools in Dénia, as it is predominantly a place for adults and retired expats to settle. But a short journey to Javea and you will find the Xabia International College and The Lady Elizabeth School there.
Being a seaside town, Dénia is all about enjoying the sunshine, and the town provides many exciting and relaxing ways for you to do this. Anything from Jetsurfing to Flyboarding in on offer, or you can take a quad excursion around the nearby national park and mountains to see the town from up high. Castillo de Dénia is a major tourist attraction and was built in the 10 century. The castle is the highest point in the city, and provides the best views of the harbour. You can also brag to your friends that you have climbed a 750 metre mountain, but Montgó is surprising easy as there is a path that winds its way up to the top (but perhaps leave that bit out, it makes the ascent sound less impressive).
